China is expected to surpass the US in the number of five specific types of warships, as it jumps from 163 in 2000 to 260 in 2030.

The American navy is expected to move in the opposite direction, shrinking from 226 warships of those same types in 2000 to 199 in 2030.

This will increase China’s capacity to reinforce its leadership in Asia, at a time when American influence in the region is weakening.

It will also turn China into a global naval power, allowing it to move far from its shores, into India, the Middle East, and East Africa.

But still, the country has only two aircraft carriers (the US has 10), and too few of the foreign land bases that it needs to support them.
