I recently hired a new employee and had her do an audition where she wrote a piece for us that we could publish. We had an independent contractor contract and paid her a fair amount for the work. We did it because we wanted to be able to see her work style, have her interact with the team, etc. I was very willing to pay for the work as it was an insignificant amount relative to the cost of hiring the wrong employee. The wrong employee can cost a company hundreds of thousands of dollars. Getting a real work example from someone can be a very cheap way to find out whether all the talking matches reality.
