INTELLIGENCE — No rules-based algorithm can keep up with the public’s changing use of social media. The Facebook Guidelines document will just keep getting larger and more difficult to maintain over time. FB needs self-learning AI systems that can spot trends and advise human regulators to make final decisions and feed into the knowledge base.

STAFFING? — The number of people policing FB posts has grown quickly from 7,500 to 15,000, and each of them still feels overwhelmed. Clearly, this is a systemic problem, not a staffing problem.

THUMBS-DOWN — FB algorithms rely on comments, shares, and reactions (like, love, haha, wow, sad, and angry), but I’ve long called for a Thumbs-down icon to help FB identify potentially dangerous posts, groups or users. Such user-driven insight can help humans police the posts, but just as anonymity is a problem with posts, it’s a problem when flagging problems too.

ADD DIFFICULTY — Add steps when flagging/reporting problem posts to capture the reasons and credentials of the reporting person. If not removed completely, FB could include a warning icon and require extra steps to access flagged posts until they are determined to be safe.
