In a recent (2019) Harris Poll we conducted among American Millennials and Gen Z found that 72% said they’d work for less money at a company whose values aligned with theirs. B Corps may be small in number now, but their influence could be outsized in setting new standards for expectations among young talent, for whom a strong market provides them leverage to do, not just say. Great read.

Chinese conglomerate Tencent Holdings suspended all reports/streaming of Houston Rockets.

How will the NBA respond? Ten cent paid billions of dollars to extend its streaming deal with the NBA and 500 million people in China watched the NBA on Tencent last season.

Businesses used to avoid politics at all costs, yet now they seem all but unavoidable. I’ll be moderating a session on this topic at Accenture next wk with Axios CEO Jim Vanderhei and CMO/CCO Amy Fuller and Stacey Jones. Would love your Qs and I’ll report back. J

    — Over the 25 years, PE funds returned more than 13% annualized, compared with about 9% for an equivalent investment in the S&P 500.

    — Of analysis of 500 companies taken private vs public from 1980 to 2006, about 20% of the PE-owned companies filed for bankruptcy—10 times the rate of those that stayed public.

    — There are more private equity managers who make at least $100 million annually than investment bankers, top financial executives, and professional athletes combined.

  • Timely cover graphic for today’s climate marches from the Economist: The red and blue stripes are a data visualization representing the world’s average temperature for every year from 1850 to 2018, compared with the average in 1971-2000.

Ironically it also looks a little like the upper right hand corner of The Americas flag.

A recent Harris Poll we conducted found that 63% of all Americans agreed that “the ROI on a college education is less than twenty years ago”. Given this has emerged as a major issue in both Warren and Sander’s platforms, look to see if New Mexico is leading a National trend.

Overreach? Or overreaction? Clearly Western tech isn’t the only game in town. TT’s parent Byte Dance is (privately) valued at $75B making it larger than SpaceX and AirBnb combined.

In a Harris Poll we conducted with NPR, 90% of Americans say they were prescribed opioids for longer than the CDC guidelines of 5 days (where chance for addiction rises significantly).

In fact, Americans told us that their typical prescription length is actually 6 times that! To compound this, nearly half reported to have taken prescription-based opioids in the past two years and 1 in 3 Americans (31%) have personally experienced opioid dependency or abuse, be it themselves, a friend or family member who has or is currently struggling.

This means as many as 77 million Americans are personally affected in some way by the opioid crisis. The AG’s should hold their ground given the enormous social calamity these companies have wrought.

  • Interesting graphic shows the rising state of diversity in America. Hispanics and Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial minority groups growing together aprx. 20% on average. While gerrymandering can hold back the tide (e.g. North Carolina this week), long term demographics are a different story.
