  • What a tired relic this presentation has become. Please, please put it back into written form and delivery by horse drawn carriage to the House. There's better uses for ones' time than this.

The State of the Union address has become a meaningless exercise in futility for any President, Congress, and The People. The process is so politicized by the two parties that a citizen will have a better time if they skip it and go to the local bowling lanes for three games and beer. The Speaker is much sharper than her opponents and is acting within her office to make this suggestion. Mail a copy to Congress Mr. Trump and plan another round of golf on The People's dime.

  • There are some people who express opinions regarding this matter that amaze me. Do they even know the portion of government operations (25% I am told) that are being impacted by the shut down? If not then I would encourage them to take a look. Wikipedia has a complete list of the government agencies

If not then I would encourage them to take a look. Wikipedia has a complete list of the government agencies impacted by the shut down. A Department I work with regularly has furloughed more than 96% of the staff: without staffing the Department of Housing and Urban Development will fail to meet existing critical housing needs. On behalf of my constituents I am very worried.

Thank you for a very well reasoned and insightful article. Like you, I can certainly relate to the changes technology has brought upon us.

In fact, they sadden me. As a workaholic carrying two smart phones I have come to the realization that I am imprisoned in a place I cannot seem to escape from. In my work I am always available and reachable now. These devices pin me down and no matter where I am or what I do, they make me work. "Cell phones" is the applicable name for these devices as we have exchanged our freedom for a prison cell.

My friends suggest I cut the devices off. No can do. As my work has large elements of responsibility for safety and security for several thousand people I cannot turn the devices off. To do so means a phone call, a text message, or an email with a health or safety issue would not be dealt with in a timely or potentially life saving way.

In my past, reading has been a sacred process for me. Reading allows the reader to escape boredom and routine in their lives. Smart phones have driven me away from my desire to read novels and biography. And that is a place I desperately need to journey to.

My thanks to the author on this piece. I am glad I found time to read it. I now need to focus on my most important New Year's resolution. Control technology. Do not allow it to continue to control me.
