Let's consider, for just a moment, how football looms ridiculously large in American culture. Discussion of football dwarfs any discussion of important issues such as politics, social issues, etc... Just the preliminary viewing prior to the super bowl showed a variety of people discussing the upcoming game, and the sport as whole, as though it were not simply important, but of the utmost importance, and those who play the game are viewed as national heroes, while our teachers, firefighters, and (dare I say it...) police officers are continually under- appreciated and under-paid. Does this same televised phenomenon occur on the 4th of July? I think not. Now let's talk truthfully about the disgrace of professional football players who are arguably the epitome of the American dream actually taking a knee during the National anthem? Am I truly the only one who is disgusted by this? How about instead of worrying about football, we take our kids to the park on a Sunday afternoon? Or volunteer at a nursing home? Find something truly important to spend your time and energy on.
