I live right on the edge of what now is and with coming development will be the largest retirement community in the nation, The Villages, Florida. By the time they finish building as it now stands, the place will have nearly a half million people. It is basically a 55+ huge subdivision development that sprawls across portions of three counties. It is nice and pretty, but you need to have your own car or golf cart to get around. In some places stores are too far for seniors let alone anyone else, to walk to stores, church, medical appointments in the Florida summer heat and humidity. I think this model presented here, is a far better model than what places like The Villages and Del Webb communities are based on. Plus with them, while you have younger people in the nearby area, in those communities, only seniors can live. I am hitting age 60 and I don't want to only live in a place that is dominated only by older people. I do like the sort of community as outlined here, but for those seniors that may not have deep financial resources, some accommodation must be made for them too. The idea that seniors could do work in food service and other areas in such a place as this to help offset their rent, utilities, etc., Is a good idea. I'd like to be in a place like this rather than a place like The Villages.
