    When driving through some of the barren land note the attempts that have been made to live on it in terms of abandoned buildings. Many such places had valuable natural resources that subsequently ran out or were too expensive to bring to market.

    Immigrants who flocked here in generations past didn't come to take advantage of a social safety net, there wasn't one. Now anyone who can't support themselves has to be put on welfare to keep them from becoming predators. So the answer is not to let them in unless they have the means to take care of themselves at least.

Didn't understand why until working for an equally cheap engineering firm and I couldn't read using the room lights, had to bring my own reading light. Finally the firm replaced the old flickering florescents, problem solved.
