    We’re being led around by the nose by the media. Their agenda is mostly commercially driven. They need clicks, facebook provides those when put in headlines. Digital is also hollowing our their ad business. These people made no bones about Facebook, back when it did things they liked to help their broken business model. In the case of govt it’s born out of a healthy chunk of ignorance and fear of something they don’t understand, ie the internet. Reinforced by the media.

    To be clear, investigations and regulation are needed. No private companies should be making the rules, even when they’re well intentioned. But the sentiment I’m reading in the comments is that somehow FB has been willingly and maliciously trying to screw people. This is utter nonsense.

    Facebook didn’t, doesn’t, and won’t ever sell your data. There are lots of businesses who do that. Legally and all above board. But not FB. They decided a long, long time ago, that this model wouldn’t work.

    In the case of the Prof Kogan and Cambridge Analytica scandal, that precipitated all of this, let’s break it down:

    1) they didn’t hand personal or friend data over without anyone’s consent....People willingly gave names and emails and various other data points through an integration with FB. An integration that Netflix, Spotify, The Guardian newspaper and who knows how many businesses used. All legal, all clear what was being shared and used the vast majority of the time to create fun and sometimes amazing experiences.

    2) People were then paid to take a personality survey, off of FB, that used that integration. What Kogan then did was pass (not been truly confirmed, but we can probably be sure it happened) that data to Cambridge Analytica.

    3) People are then up in arms about how this data was then used, to run targeted ads supposedly, by right wing political groups to influence the 2016 US elections. Calling it psyops, that the military used...This is just advertising guys. It’s digital marketing. It’s not warfare or voodoo. It’s the same approach that Obama and his team used.

    4) When Facebook got wind of what Kogan and CA had supposedly done, they demanded (through their legal team) for Kogan and CA to confirm in writing that they didn’t sell or receive any of this freely given data, they responded that they had not. They lied.

    Should Facebook have believed Kogan and CA. No. They were naive. Maybe wanted to believe people wouldnt be that underhand. But to think that this is somehow part of a grand plan, or done on purpose, is utter nonsense. They need people to feel secure and to trust their platforms. They’ve got nothing without it in the long term. Regardless of how good the current earnings have been, this company is in the fight for its life, because of what’s happened. It would never have willingly done this.

    Should integrations like the ones used above exist today, in the same way. No. The world and society’s attitude towards such openness has shifted. That’s why those integrations don’t exist in the way they did anymore. And that happened, before the CA scandal was even on the horizon.

    No company wants to have these things happen. No one at FB, Google, or any of big tech wake up in the morning, and think, how can we screw up for our community and customers today....Same way that when Visa, BA, the passport office, the tax office, etc, all end up yielding seriously important info, they didn’t want it to happen.

    However for some reason, that’s ok, we can let them off, and continue to be their customers or trust them with our data. Maybe it’s because we’re all being manipulated, by organisations with less transparent agendas?
