    As a NYC cyclist who regularly commutes over the Brooklyn Bridge to work, having a way to alert pedestrians (mostly tourists) that they’re walking in the bike lane is a matter of public safety.

    A few years back, I took the author’s proposed approach of simply navigating around pedestrians, but I didn’t see a tourist backing into the bike lane to take a picture in time, which led to him knocking me off my bike. He was fine and I was injured.

    Additionally today, I’ve seen pedestrians actively taunting cyclists as they bike by on the Brooklyn Bridge, contributing to the antisocial environment the author references. In some countries (e.g. Switzerland) driver’s license exams include rules for how pedestrians and cyclists should behave on the road — in addition to drivers — maybe we need more guidance in the US as well.
