The role of commercial enterprises in society is changing, and so are the motivations of entrepreneurs and employees as they make decisions about why and where to work. From mission-driven startups to corporate behemoths, the evolution in the purpose of companies promises to solve some problems and create new ones, as good intentions and a search for meaning get folded into a system historically geared toward maximizing profits or shareholder value.
