The 2026 unofficial summer spans the longest possible stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with both holidays landing on the earliest and latest dates they can each fall, according to The New York Times.

This year, May 25 is the earliest date on which Memorial Day can land, while Sept. 7 is the latest date Labor Day can occur — together forming the widest possible unofficial summer window. By the astronomical calendar, summer officially begins at the solstice on June 21 and closes with the fall equinox on Sept. 22, according to The Times.

The extended unofficial summer arrived with an uncooperative start in the New York area, however. Ahead of the holiday, the region had already absorbed one to two inches of rainfall, with CBS News reporting that more wet weather was on the way before the weekend's end, according to CBS News.

Atlantic Ocean beaches along the coast faced a high rip current risk through Monday, after the New York City Office of Emergency Management put a beach warning in place for life-threatening rip currents, according to CBS News. Overnight Sunday into Monday, temperatures sat in the low to mid 50s before afternoon sunshine pushed highs into the low to mid 70s.

A wet Memorial Day is far from unprecedented: CBS News noted that going back to 1869, rain has fallen on the holiday in roughly 42% of years. Drier and warmer weather was set to take over for the days that followed, with temperatures climbing into the 80s across the New York area for much of the week.
