64.7 million rupees ($1.07 million): The amount earned by the Trinamool Congress in from 2011 to 2013 by selling artworks by Mamata Banerjee, its leader and West Bengal chief minister. The income of most Indian political parties consists of donations and interest earned from bank accounts where these donations are held. For the years 2004-2005 and 2011-2012, for example, data collated by the Association for Democratic Reforms shows that these two streams accounted for 96% of income of Congress Party and 97% of the BJP’s. By comparison, in the same period, only 48% of Trinamool’s income came from donations; and as much as 17% came from the sale of paintings made by its leader.
