Update Oct. 5, 10:42am: Police report that 26-year-old Christopher Harper-Mercer, shot and killed nine people and injured seven others. On Saturday, the county sheriff John Hanlin said that Harper-Mercer committed suicide after he and the officers who arrived on the scene exchanged gunfire Thursday. State police are reporting a mass shooting on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A county official told CNN that the shooter is in custody.
According to local news channel KGW, UCC is located about three hours south of Portland, and has about 3,300 full-time students and 16,000 part-timers.
The United States has long suffered from a slew of mass school shootings.
