American retailers OfficeMax Inc. and Office Depot Inc. are in talks to merge, according to sources. The deal has not been completed yet and the talks could still fall through, they note, but an announcement could come as soon as this week. OfficeMax and Home Depot, sellers of office supplies and furniture, are some of the latest examples of brick and mortar stores hit hard by online competition. Between the two, the companies have about 2,575 stores across the US in expensive warehouse spaces.
