About 47% of American workers are women, according to the latest data from the US Census Bureau. That number hasn’t changed much in recent years, up just one percentage point since 2009. But the percent of workers who are women varies widely by county, as you can see in the map above.
The largest county with a majority of female workers is Philadelphia, at 52%. That’s 25,855 more women than men in the local workforce. Teaching and nursing are popular professions in Pennsylvania’s largest city, and both skew female.
