A devastating wildfire in northern Alberta, Canada has destroyed over 2,400 homes and buildings so far. But for one homeowner in particular, the disaster came with an element of the surreal. James O’Reilly evacuated his home in Fort McMurray a mere 20 minutes before it was engulfed in flames. As he was driving away, his iPhone buzzed with a notification from Canary, a home security app he’d started using a month earlier. It proceeded to stream him live video of his living room filling with flames. A spokesman for Canary says that as services like it grow in popularity, we’re inevitably going to start seeing more videos like the one above. ”The more these kinds of devices get out there,” he said, “the more you see people capturing some pretty surprising things, of all nature, in their homes.”
