A longtime scourge and curiosity of the internet is blog spam: bizarre comments on otherwise normal blog posts that exist merely to link to some unrelated product or service. The spammy messages fall somewhere in the web’s uncanny valley—effusively kind and inquisitive, like an overeager acquaintance, but oddly intoned, like a computer with social anxiety.
Comment spam follows a formula, which was made plain the other day when a spambot accidentally posted its entire template on the blog of programmer Scott Hanselman. With his permission, we’ve reproduced some of the spam comment recipes here and added colorful formatting to make it readable. The spambot constructs new, vaguely unique comments by selecting from each set of options.
