The evening that began as a preemptive celebration for Hillary Clinton gradually turned to despair and disappointment at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
Multiple polls and predictive models had put Clinton in the lead heading into the Nov. 8 election, but that quickly diminished as results poured in. About a mile across town, the victory party for Donald Trump had erupted into jubilation. Though Trump is ahead of Clinton, the final results had not been announced at the time of publication.
The pictures of the two camps in the same city tell the story of the night.
