Starbucks is set to open its first branch in India, traditionally thought of as a nation of tea drinkers. India’s annual per capita coffee consumption of 82 grams (three ounces) is far below that of 6.79 kilograms (15 pounds) in Germany and 5.87 kg in Brazil, according to data from the International Coffee Organisation. But India’s big cities have seen an explosion of hip Western-style cafes catering to young, wealthy urbanites. So interest in drinking coffee is growing. Chai latte, anyone?
