Amgen is pouring another $300 million into its Puerto Rico drug factory

The additional investment builds on $650 million Amgen committed to its Juncos facility last year, which supplies medicines to more than 60 countries

Amgen $AMGN is investing an additional $300 million in its biologics manufacturing facility in Juncos, Puerto Rico, the company said Monday.

According to MarketWatch, the money is earmarked for three purposes: scaling up production, integrating new technologies, and keeping its medicine supply uninterrupted. New jobs are also expected to result from the expansion, spanning construction positions, advanced manufacturing roles, and participation in local workforce development initiatives.

Amgen $AMGN had already pledged $650 million to the Puerto Rico location in the prior year, a commitment projected to generate 750 jobs, and Monday's announcement layers on top of that figure. Medicines produced at Juncos reach patients in upward of 60 countries, and the site ranks among the largest biologics manufacturing facilities anywhere in the world.

The announcement is part of a broader push by global drugmakers to expand U.S. manufacturing in response to tariff pressure from President Donald Trump. Under an executive order Trump issued in April, branded pharmaceuticals brought into the U.S. face tariffs as high as 100% — a penalty manufacturers can avoid only by striking government drug-pricing agreements or shifting production to American soil.

Amgen $AMGN's U.S. manufacturing expansion extends well beyond Puerto Rico. Recent domestic commitments by Amgen include a $600 million science and innovation center in California, a North Carolina outlay exceeding $1.5 billion, and $900 million directed toward Ohio.
