Apple said AI is compressing the window attackers need to exploit known software flaws, prompting a change in its usual patching schedule

Apple $AAPL released iOS 26.5.2 and iPadOS 26.5.2 on Monday, pushing out nearly 30 security fixes ahead of their planned release cycle in response to concerns that artificial intelligence is helping attackers exploit software flaws faster than before.
In explaining the decision to Reuters, Apple said AI-powered tools have made it easier and faster for attackers to build exploits, forcing the company to rethink how long it waits before pushing security fixes out of beta and onto users' devices.
Apple said the update delivers fixes that would normally have been bundled with iOS 26.6, a version currently in beta testing. Rather than waiting for that broader release, the company made the patches available to all users, according to the outlet. Apple said there is no evidence that any of the patched vulnerabilities have been actively exploited.
For years, Apple has tied security patches to full version upgrades, a practice the company is now breaking from. The change reflects Apple's recognition that AI tools have made the period between public disclosure of a vulnerability and its active exploitation dangerously short.
The update covers a wide range of components. Most of the fixes involve WebKit, Apple's browser engine, and address issues including memory corruption, cross-origin data exposure, process crashes, and sandbox escapes. Additional patches cover the kernel, libxslt, WebRTC, and the IOGPUFamily graphics component. Several vulnerabilities were credited to researchers affiliated with AI tools, including two credited to Milad Nasr and Nicholas Carlini working with Claude from Anthropic, and others credited to OpenAI Codex Security.
The update is available for iPhone 11 and later, as well as a range of iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini models, the company said. A corresponding macOS 26.5.2 update was also released Sunday.
The decision aligns with broader warnings from government security agencies. The Five Eyes intelligence alliance warned that AI models are poised to transform offensive hacking within months, saying frontier AI capabilities would "fundamentally transform both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities." The agencies specifically flagged that AI has shortened the time between when a software flaw is discovered and when it is weaponized, and urged organizations to accelerate software patching as a practical response.
To install the update, iPhone owners can navigate to the Software Update section found under General in the Settings app.
