Nearly six hours elapsed between the moment a physician pronounced 18-month-old Arizona boy Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino dead in an emergency room and the discovery that he was still alive in a hospital cold room, NBC News reports.
A 911 call went out around 5:38 p.m. on Feb. 8 after the toddler was found unresponsive in the family pool; a relative performed CPR before paramedics transported him to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where a physician listed in the police report as Dr. A. Toosi pronounced him dead at 6:20 p.m., according to NBC News. When the medical examiner's team came to collect the body just before midnight, personnel discovered the child was breathing on his own, according to the report. He was then airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
The Gilbert Police Department has recommended that Vincent's parents face child abuse charges, according to NBC News. Investigators noted in the police report that the parents may have failed to notice their son had gotten into the pool because of possible drug impairment; both told police they had used marijuana earlier that day, according to NBC News.
