Wildfire smoke can seep into a home through doors, windows and vents, and it can linger for days after the fire itself has moved on. The right air purifier needs to clear that smoke quickly and keep doing it hour after hour without running up an enormous electric bill.
Consumer Reports tested purifiers built for rooms of every size on smoke removal, noise and operating cost, so shoppers can find a fit for their home.

At 50 pounds, the Coway Airmega ProX weighs more than any other air purifier in this lineup, and it delivers performance to match, built for extra-large rooms. Consumer Reports found it excelled at clearing dust, pollen and smoke on both higher and lower speeds, crediting a three-stage filtration system, and rated it especially quiet given its size. CR noted it covers up to 2,126 square feet, 800 more than a comparably sized Alen model can handle, and it comes equipped with three fan speeds, an indicator for filter changes and a built-in dirt sensor, though it skips the remote control and app found on other purifiers here. Annual filter and energy costs run about $259, and Coway earned excellent marks for predicted reliability alongside high owner satisfaction in CR member surveys.

The Honeywell $HON HPA120W costs $75 and targets smaller spaces up to 150 square feet, making it an affordable option in this lineup. Consumer Reports rated its dust, pollen and smoke removal strong on higher settings and impressive on lower settings as well, and noted the HEPA filter pairs with an activated carbon filter to help cut down on odors. CR found it quiet on its lowest speed, though noise picks up as the fan speed increases, and pointed out this model skips a smartphone app or remote control. Annual operating costs run about $65, lower than every other purifier in this lineup, and Honeywell scored well for predicted reliability in CR member surveys, though owner satisfaction came back just so-so.

The portable Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max costs $300 and includes an indicator light that signals when the filter needs changing or cleaning, along with a dirt sensor, four speed settings and a carbon filter paired with a HEPA filter to target wildfire smoke specifically. Consumer Reports rated its dust, pollen and smoke removal excellent on the highest setting, with some noise at that speed, and found it quieter on low while still delivering strong results. CR noted the manufacturer rates it for spaces near 465 square feet, pegs yearly upkeep at roughly $136, which is a good deal less than the pricier Blue Pure 211+, and puts its weight at just 8 pounds, light enough to carry from room to room. Blueair earned strong reliability scores and high owner satisfaction in CR member surveys.
