Printers aren't known for being the most reliable technology. But if you're looking to buy one for your home, Consumer Reports has some recommendations.

Its experts set out to find the best laser printers. Continue reading to see its picks.

Best compact laser printer

CR likes the Canon imageCLASS LBP247dw for a smaller, more compact printer. It's a black and white only printer that "earns top marks for text quality and speed," is "easy to use" and "offers a number of handy features," CR said. The model retails for around $380.

Best Multifunction Black-and-White Laser Printer

The Brother MFC-L5915DW is large for a home office, but can do basically everything—besides print in color—that you'd want from a printer. You'll spend significantly less on toner with it than an inkjet printer, too. But it doesn't come cheap, priced around $600 or more depending on the retailer.

Best Single-Function Color Laser Printer

The Brother HL-L3295CDW is a great option if you want color. "The text quality is exemplary, while both the print speed and graphics quality are very good," CR said. It's more expensive than the black-and-white model, retailing for around $430 or more.

Best Do-It-All Color Laser Printer

The Brother MFC-L3765CDW does everything — and does it well too, according to CR. It got the highest rating of any model for text quality, and it's fast. It retails for $390, and it's large, but not as big as Brother's multifunction black-and-white laser printer.
