Mattresses are too expensive and used too often to be bought without some research. But where to even begin when you’re going to make a purchase?
Luckily, Consumer Reports and Reader's Digest did the hard work for you. They tested and rated hundreds of mattresses to find the best ones on the market.

Casper’s hybrid innerspring mattress, meaning it has steel coils for support, tied for first among its kind. Consumer Reports said it’s a great choice for people who overheat while sleeping. It also offers solid support for back sleepers and is good for people sharing a bed. It’s priced between $1,999. and $2,075.
Casper Dream

Casper’s Dream innerspring tied with the brand’s Snow model. Consumer Reports said this one is known to be softer and earned a perfect score for durability, so you can expect it to last a decade. It costs $1,495.
Casper Dream Max

Casper’s most plush innerspring option also tied for first and is great for people who want something extra soft but still want decent support, according to Consumer Reports. It’s the most expensive of the three innerspring models, selling for $2,595.
Casper The One

Casper’s The One tied for best in the all-foam category, with a good medium-soft feel that provides plenty of support and should last you a decade, according to Consumer Reports. It’s more affordable than the innerspring models, retailing for $799.
Essentia Grateful Eight Organic

Essentia’s Grateful organic foam mattress also tied for first in foam, recognized for its balanced and consistent support and great comfort, according to Consumer Reports. It’s more expensive than the Casper, selling for $1,784.
Sleep Number p6 Smart Bed

The Sleep Number p6 Smart Bed, an adjustable air mattress that can be customized for firmness, tied for the top score in its category. Consumer Reports said it's durable, supportive, and good for back sleepers. It also has great motion isolation. It doesn’t come cheap, though, selling for $3,199.
Sleep Number ClimateCool

Sleep Number’s ClimateCool also tied for first in the adjustable category. Consumer Reports said you can change its firmness and temperature, and it's designed to help eliminate night sweating and overheating. It’s the most expensive model on the list, selling for $5,500.
Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic Mattress was Reader's Digest best overall mattress, thanks to its varied firmness options, comfort for stomach and back sleepers, range of sizes, and 365-night home trial. It also comes with free delivery and Saatva will remove your old mattress. The only downside is it costs north of $2,000 for a queen. And you have to pay $99 to return it.
Avocado Green Mattress
Reader's Digest recommends the Avocado Green Mattress as the best "nontoxic" option. It liked that it's made with entirely organic products, including latex and wool, has a one-year trial, and has a large range of sizes. It warned some customers reported sagging after a few years. The mattress is priced just under $1,300.
Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress
Reader's Digest called the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress the best budget option, often priced under $200 when on sale. It's avaiable on Amazon $AMZN in a range of sizes and comes with a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial. It's also delivered in a box, which makes moving it around easy, though it warned its not ideal for hot sleepers.
