If you’re looking for a hybrid SUV and don’t want to spend an absurd amount of money, Consumer Reports has you covered.

Its experts created a list of the best small hybrid SUVs for under $50,000 in 2026. “Today’s hybrids are often superior to their conventionally powered siblings in nearly every way. That means consumers shopping for an SUV shouldn’t just consider a hybrid — they should focus solely on one,” CR said.

CR found that hybrid models were broadly more responsive, quieter, and had a smoother ride than their gas-powered siblings.

Priced from $34,730 to $41,545, the Forester Hybrid returns 34 mpg overall while prioritizing comfort and ease of use. CR said it feels calm and quiet and is a particularly practical choice for everyday driving, thanks to excellent visibility and a roomy back seat.

Priced between $26,995 and $34,995, the Crosstrek Hybrid gets 35 mpg overall in a compact, smaller frame. It offers a smooth ride, straightforward controls, and standard all-wheel drive, making it a good pick for drivers who want efficiency without bells and whistles.

With a price range of $32,450 to $42,075, the Tucson Hybrid delivers 35 mpg overall and a more refined driving experience than its gas-only counterpart. It feels quick, stays quiet on the road, and offers generous passenger and cargo space.

Starting at $35,630, the CR-V Hybrid achieves 35 mpg overall while keeping things balanced across the board. It combines smooth acceleration, user-friendly tech, and a spacious interior that works well for both commuting and road trips. The highest trims do reach $50,000, though.

Ranging from $40,490 to $47,190, the Sportage PHEV gets 31 mpg overall after its electric range is used up. It can travel on electricity for short trips, then switches to hybrid driving, and offers a comfortable ride and a roomy cabin.

Priced from $30,490 to $40,590, the Sportage Hybrid stands out with 36 mpg overall, which is actually better than PHEV. It feels fun and smooth in daily driving, CR said, with a nice ride and a spacious interior that’s great for families.

With prices between $34,750 and $40,450, the CX-50 Hybrid delivers an impressive 37 mpg overall. CR found its steering responsive and enjoyed its more upscale interior feel.

Starting at $40,325 and reaching $48,550, the Tucson PHEV returns 31 mpg overall once running as a hybrid. It can handle short drives on electric power alone, while still offering a comfortable ride and plenty of space inside. It’s more expensive than the hybrid-only version, though.

Priced between $28,995 and $33,030, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient options o the list, getting 41 mpg overall. It’s quick off the line and easy to drive, though its interior is more basic than some competitors.

Priced from $43,245 to $53,695 (meanig some trims are above $50K), the Outlander PHEV delivers 25 mpg overall in hybrid mode. It can run on electric power for longer stretches than most, but fuel economy drops once the battery is depleted. CR warned it has a stiff ride.
