Americans love their SUVs, which make up the majority of new car purchases in the country. But not all SUVs are created equal.
Consumer Reports tested more than 100 SUVs to find the best ones currently to buy this summer. It looked at each vehicle’s road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, safety, and other metrics.

Drivers love the 2026 Crown Signia — and so do CR testers. “The ride is comfortable and controlled, and handling is competent and secure,” CR said. “The interior is elegant, the front seats are very comfortable, and the rear seat is reasonably roomy.” It starts around $44,500 and gets an impressive 37 mpg overall.

Starting around $45,000, the redesigned Passport comes CR recommended. The SUV won praise for its comfort, handling, and straightforward controls. Plus, it has a roomy backseat and storage. Mileage isn’t great, though, at 21 mpg overall.

Subaru excels across the board, and particularly in the subcompact space. CR recommends the 2026 Crosstrek, which starts at $27,000. It said the small SUV "delivers an excellent ride, good fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and enough ground clearance for mild off-roading all in a reasonably sized and priced package." Its one complaint is that it feels a tad "underpowered." It gets 35 mpg.

Another Subaru CR loved was the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid. It's bigger and more expensive than the Crosstrek and starts at just under $35,000. CR said the car is comfortable, has a spacious backseat, and simple controls for safe driving. Its one complaint was the SUV has "long stopping distances." It gets 34 mpg.

Drivers and experts alike love the Highlander Hybrid and the longer Grand Highlander Hybrid. Both cars will set you back somewhere around $45,000 with simple trims, but get an overall 35 mpg, have room for the whole family, and are safe and comfortable.

The Palisade Hybrid starts at $44,160 and placed first in CR’s ranking of 3-row midsized SUVs. CR liked its quick acceleration and luxurious interior rim. While the second row is roomy, CR warmed the third row is more suited for kids than adults. It gets 26 mpg.

The Santa Fe comes CR recommended and gets an overall 34 mpg, which is impressive for a three-row SUV. CR experts and owners alike love the car, which has a comfortable and quiet cabin, lots of cargo space, and drives nicely. It starts a little bit above $36,000.

The 2026 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, priced from $32,450, delivers 35 mpg overall and balances roomy space with great handling. Its hybrid setup is speedy and quiet, and CR notes that its ride stays steady while remaining responsive during dangerous moments on the road.

Starting at $35,630, the CR-V Hybrid achieves 35 mpg overall while keeping things balanced across the board. It combines smooth acceleration, user-friendly tech, and a spacious interior that works well for both commuting and road trips. The highest trims do reach $50,000, though.
