Leaky cleaners scatter the irritants they collect. Consumer Reports tested 135,000-plus machines on filtration to find the best picks for allergies

About 80 million Americans live with seasonal allergies, and the vacuum running across bedroom floors and upholstered furniture is one of the primary vectors for redistributing dust, pet dander, and pollen. A HEPA filter traps those particles instead of releasing them back into the air. Choosing a bagged model eliminates the dust cloud that forms when emptying a canister. Uprights, canisters, and stick models each perform differently across carpet, bare floors, and upholstery, so the right type matters as much as the brand.
Consumer Reports loaded each vacuum with wood flour, measured exhaust particles with a laser spectrometer, and drew on member surveys of 135,906 vacuums purchased new between 2015 and 2025 to produce its overall ratings. Here are the 10 it rates highest for allergy sufferers.

The Kenmore BU1018 is among the top bagged uprights in CR's 2026 tests with an overall score of 77. Bare-floor cleaning earns an excellent rating and outperforms carpet cleaning, making it a strong fit for hardwood-heavy homes. CR credits the built-in HEPA filter as the primary mechanism behind the machine's top-notch clean emissions score. A full-bag indicator signals when the filtration system needs attention before containment degrades.

The Kenmore Intuition BU4050 is a budget-friendly bagged upright, and CR rates its pet hair performance among the strongest in the category. HEPA filtration keeps exhaust clean, and a hair eliminator on the brush roll prevents strands from wrapping around the roller. That mechanism addresses the primary cause of mid-session suction loss on pet-hair-heavy floors. CR says the lift-away design adds portability, and adjustable suction control lets users dial back airflow for lighter debris on bare floors.

Miele canister models earn the highest possible scores for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in CR's member surveys, and the Complete C3 Marin's filtration effectiveness rates superb in those same tests. Pet hair pickup is rated excellent and airflow through hose tools is very good. CR says the machine ranks among the quietest vacuums in its test pool. Users have manual pile-height adjustment for carpet and a brush on/off switch for bare floors.

Among canister vacuums, the Miele Guard L1 earns an overall score of 80, the highest CR assigns in that category. Bare-floor cleaning on hardwood and tile is a standout score, and carpet cleaning earns a good rating. CR points to the universal powerhead as the mechanism that allows seamless transitions between floor types, and a 2-in-1 upholstery and crevice nozzle extends cleaning reach to furniture without a tool swap.

At a moderate price, the Eureka WhirlWind XL NEN186BL earns excellent scores for filtration and pet hair pickup in CR's canister tests. Bare-floor cleaning is also rated great, though carpet performance is less strong. CR rates predicted reliability for Eureka canisters very good based on member surveys, and fewer replugs are needed during room-to-room cleaning thanks to its 20-foot retractable cord.

CR calls the Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog one of the best bagless canisters available, a judgment backed by an outstanding bare-floor cleaning score. Filtration performance is also excellent. CR says the machine releases little debris back into the environment, a quality that earns its place among the allergy-focused picks. Pet hair pickup is rated excellent, and the machine runs lighter than most canisters in CR's test pool.

No cordless vacuum scores higher in CR's 2026 tests than the Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Ultra VS90F40DMK/AA. Pet hair pickup and filtration effectiveness — the two metrics CR weights most heavily for allergy sufferers — are both rated top-notch. The removable battery allows mid-session swaps, and the included cleaning station serves as both a charger and an automatic dustbin that empties into an enclosed bin, eliminating the dust cloud a standard bagless emptying generates.
