A man visiting Yellowstone National Park sustained multiple broken bones after a bison caught him mid-flight, launching him nearly 8 feet off the ground, The New York Times reported.
Friday evening's attack, which began around 8:30 p.m., drew the bison to Bridge Bay Campground, a site along Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming's southeastern corner of the park, according to The Times. Carl Isom-McDaniel, the injured man, holds positions on multiple community boards in Washington state and was running from the animal when it struck him.
The bull had already disrupted the campground before reaching Isom-McDaniel, chasing off at least one group of teenage boys who fled in different directions, The Times reported. Footage of the rampage was recorded by Bozeman, Mont.-based professional photographer Mike MacLeod, whose home sits about 130 miles from the park.
Daylight remained, with dusk still roughly an hour off, and a crowd of visitors was out and about when the animal went on its rampage, according to The Times. Among the campground's occupants were tents and small recreational vehicles.
The bison's aggressive behavior was consistent with the onset of mating season, which drives up testosterone in bulls, MacLeod told The Times in a Sunday interview. The campground, which is operated near Yellowstone Lake, drew sizable crowds at the time of the incident.
