The asset manager reported rising revenue and record assets under management, but one massive withdrawal is too big to ignore

BlackRock $BLK posted a somewhat mixed second quarter Tuesday, with earnings per share coming in at $12.05, revenue up 13% over last year, and assets under management rising to a record $12.5 trillion. By most metrics, it was a solid showing in the face of macro noise, even as some sequential numbers are still down versus the last quarter of 2024.
But tucked inside the release, among the headline numbers, was a rather unusual disclosure: Long-term net inflows were impacted by a single institutional client redeeming $52 billion from a low-fee index fund.
BlackRock did not name the client, but the outflow was large enough to be explicitly cited in the release. In fact, it appears to be one of the firm’s largest-ever acknowledged single-client redemptions, at least in recent memory.
Without that one redemption, long-term net inflows would have come in around $120 billion — double the reported figure. While BlackRock emphasized that the mandate was low-fee and that organic base fee growth remained strong at 6%, it’s relatively rare for the firm to isolate a single client decision in a quarterly update, which underscores the size of the move and its importance to BlackRock’s results — even if $52 billion represents just a tiny fraction of the company’s assets under management.
If this were just a routine movement of capital, BlackRock could’ve easily left it as “institutional net outflows.” But they went out of their way to frame it as non-recurring, low-fee, and not indicative of broader demand trends. That added emphasis suggests they were anticipating analyst attention — which only makes it more worth watching, not less.
While the client’s identity remains unknown, the scale suggests it could have been a large pension fund, sovereign wealth fund, or central bank rotating capital elsewhere — possibly to fund private market allocations, meet liquidity needs, or take asset-management functions in-house. It might also been a more directional signal, as in a single large investor pulling out of U.S. equities, for instance. But it’s impossible to know given the publicly available information.
The rest of the quarter reflected some strength across the firm's various business lines: iShares ETFs pulled in $85 billion, private markets grew to $215 billion in AUM, and BlackRock’s tech services revenue rose 26% over last year.
But the $52 billion redemption remains the quarter’s most interesting footnote — one that may presage larger portfolio shifts happening just beneath the surface.
