Eric Bieniemy's son charged in shooting of Chiefs OC's wife at Virginia home

Speaking to reporters following Monday's practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri — where Kansas City is conducting its preseason camp — Reid confirmed that Mia Bieniemy's condition had stabilized, according to The New York Times. He described her as "a saint, one of God's good blessings."

According to The Times, Bieniemy has traveled back to Virginia to support his wife, and Reid offered no indication of when he might rejoin the team. Bleymaier, a Chiefs staff member since 2016 who currently holds the passing game coordinator title, will take over play-calling responsibilities; Reid noted that offensive line coach Andy Heck will take on an expanded role as well.

"The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family," Chiefs spokesperson Brad Gee said, according to NBC News. "Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Now 56 and back in Kansas City for a second tour as offensive coordinator, Bieniemy previously held the same role with the Chiefs from 2018 through 2022; he subsequently led offenses in Washington and at UCLA before taking a running backs coaching position with Chicago in 2025.

Update, July 27, 2026: Authorities said Elijah Zion Bieniemy shot his mother with a .22-caliber Ruger, striking her in the left forearm and shoulder, according to the sheriff's account of the 911 call. (per The Guardian)
