With demand threatening to exceed available supply, state officials are weighing intervention as the coastal Texas city confronts a mounting water emergency
A dire forecast delivered at an emergency City Council session called by Mayor Paulette Guajardo last month put Corpus Christi on notice: without urgent action, available water could fall short of demand before the year is out, according to The New York Times.
"Every day of delay increases uncertainty," Guajardo told the council, according to The Times.
Drought, a surge in industrial consumption, and failures of local governance have converged on a city of more than 300,000 that anchors one of Texas's busiest industrial ports, The Times reported. Abbott $ABT has raised the prospect of a state takeover, warning publicly that he could end up having to "run that city" himself. President Donald Trump, during a visit to Corpus Christi last month, pledged federal support for water projects.
Texas state Sen. Charles Perry, a Republican who chairs a Senate water committee, described the situation as a signal of broader risk for cities across the country, according to The Times. "This is actually the canary in the coal mine," Perry told the outlet.
Federal data cited by The Times shows drought gripping roughly half the country, and surging water use by power plants and data centers has pushed industrial demand to new highs — conditions that have left many municipalities, not just Corpus Christi, under strain.
