CVS is now filling pet prescriptions at its 9,000 pharmacies nationwide

The pharmacy chain will dispense select medications for dogs and cats, including antibiotics, insulin, and flea and tick treatments

CVS is now filling pet prescriptions at its 9,000 pharmacies nationwide

CVS Health $CVS announced Tuesday that its approximately 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide will now fill prescription medications for dogs and cats. The available medications include antibiotics, allergy drugs, flea and tick treatments, insulin, and pain relievers, the company said.

CVS said pet prescriptions will qualify for a range of the same services the pharmacy extends to human customers, among them automatic refills and prescription syncing. Select medications will also be available for home delivery.

Pet owners looking to fill a prescription have two options: hand-deliver a written script to their nearest CVS Pharmacy or have their veterinarian call or send the order in on their behalf. CVS also lets pet owners create a profile for their animals on CVS.com so they can track and manage qualifying prescriptions via the CVS Health app. CVS noted that the ability for veterinarians to submit prescriptions electronically is on the roadmap and expected to launch later this year.

"With the addition of pet medication dispensing, CVS Pharmacy can now serve every member of the family," Sid Tenneti, Senior Vice President and Interim President of Pharmacy and Consumer Wellness at CVS Health, said in a statement. "Combined with our convenient locations, extended hours, and broad range of health and wellness products, we offer a true one-stop destination for care."

CVS is not the first large chain to move into this space — Publix, Costco $COST, Walmart $WMT, and Walgreens $WBA have all been filling pet prescriptions for some time, according to ABC News.

In addition to prescription medications, CVS carries pet products in stores and on CVS.com under its own Pet Central brand, including grooming tools, toys, cat litter, and puppy training pads, the company said. New items under that brand are planned for September. CVS said it has also added national brand pet products to its assortment, including items from Milk-Bone, Greenies, and Temptations.
