A skeleton found beneath the floor of a church in the Dutch village of Wolder may belong to Charles de Batz de Castelmore — the historical figure known as Count d'Artagnan — with test results expected within weeks, according to The New York Times.
The bones turned up at St. Peter and Paul's Church, a site that has carried a local legend for centuries: that Charles de Batz de Castelmore — the historical Count d'Artagnan, who rose to captain of the Musketeers of the Guard under King Louis XIV — was buried there. Dumas turned the real soldier into a literary hero in "The Three Musketeers," casting him alongside Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as the story's driving protagonist.
