Trump in the UK, trade-war tussles, arrival fallacy

Good morning, Quartz readers!

What to watch for today

Trump drops in on the UK. The US president will meet various British royals and lunch with the Queen as he kicks off a three-day state visit. He sparked controversy beforehand by backing Boris Johnson as the next Conservative Party leader (and thus prime minister), much to the chagrin of opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn and others.

Huawei moves forward. The Chinese telecoms firm will launch market pushes (paywall) during Thailand’s annual Mobile Expo, and begin defending itself in a trade secrets case in a Texas federal court. Meanwhile the company has scaled back its phone production following blacklisting by the US, according to the South China Morning Post.

Apple gathers developers. The company hosts its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California from today through June 7. Expect changes or updates to iOS, macOS, and built-in apps like Maps, Mail Home, and iMessage.

Over the weekend

China and the US implemented tariffs against each other. The US started collecting higher tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods at seaports early Saturday morning. In response China began slapping increased retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion worth of American goods.

FedEx became entangled in the trade war. China announced an investigation into the US delivery company, which it said violated Chinese laws by diverting packages sent to Huawei to the US instead. China recently announced it would create a list of “unreliable” foreign entities (paywall), following the US blacklisting Huawei.

The leader of Germany’s Social Democrats quit. The resignation of Andrea Nahles, prompted by the party’s weak performance in the recent EU elections, could destabilize chancellor Angela Merkel’s coalition and further undermine her succession plan.

The global airline industry cut its forecasts. Despite passenger numbers continuing to rise, fuel costs and trade tensions prompted the International Air Transport Association to cut its profit expectations for the year ahead. The industry body’s 2019 forecast of $28 billion, down from $35.5 billion in December, would be the lowest in five years.

British Airways resumed flights to Pakistan after more than a decade. It will run three flights a week between London and Islamabad, the only Western airline to offer the service. The airline suspended the route after a 2008 attack on the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan’s capital city, in which 54 people died.

Quartz Obsession

There’s simply not enough shade. Poor urban design practices have left sidewalks and shared spaces unsheltered from the sun. In a rapidly warming world, trees have tremendous cooling power, and access to shade isn’t a nicety, it’s an environmental justice issue. Grab some cover with the Quartz Obsession.

London is no longer the world’s top financial center. Brexit chaos has seen to that.

Summer doesn’t need any more mason jars. They’re terrible for drinking, bad as bowls, and an overdone aesthetic.

Multiple career goals are better than one. Being realistic about career success can help us avoid “arrival fallacy” (paywall).

Surprising discoveries

US beachgoers have real-life Jaws to fear. The return of great white sharks has scientists focused on ways humans can live (if not swim) with them in harmony.

Millennials spend as much proportionally on luxuries as their parents did at their age. They just have far less money to begin with.

Japan’s salary traditions are being upended by Google and Apple. Global competition for tech talent is forcing Sony to reconsider a seniority-based approach to pay.

Ben & Jerry’s wants in on the CBD business. The ice-cream maker plans to add cannabidiol to its US products as soon as it is legalized federally.

A meal with Warren Buffett costs over $4.5 million. That was the winning bid for an annual “power lunch” with the Berkshire Hathaway CEO benefiting charity.
