Good morning, Quartz readers!
The Daily Brief will be taking a break on Thursday, June 20th. We’ll be back in your inbox on Friday, June 21.
Here’s what you need to know
There’s a new most valuable company in the world. Nvidia surpassed Apple and Microsoft in market cap yesterday, and the chipmaker’s execs are having a stock market field day.
Boeing’s Starliner is delaying its trip back to Earth — again. The return has been postponed another four days after the spaceship dealt with helium leaks and thruster issues.
The Amazon Labor Union voted to join the Teamsters. The ALU was the first union for Amazon workers, but it has struggled financially and has yet to begin bargaining with Amazon.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended inspections of avocados and mangoes from Mexico. An unspecified safety concern for its workers led to the pause, and depending on how long it lasts, supply for both fruits could be disrupted.
Americans are eating better — depending on their income
The quality of food Americans are consuming has improved significantly over the past two decades. A new study from the Annals of Internal Medicine found that the percent of adults with a poor diet fell from 48.8% in 1999 to 37.4% in 2020.
But income still plays a massive role in diet. The study found that the percent of Americans with a lower income and poor diet fell from 52% to 47%. By comparison, the percent of Americans with a higher income and poor diet fell much more, from 45% to 30%.
Disparities like this one are important to understand, considering that over a million Americans die from diet-related diseases every year.
Welcome to the the Netflix House
Would you like to dance “with your partner to an orchestral cover of a Taylor Swift song on a replica of the Bridgerton set” and then immediately “compete in the Glass Bridge challenge from Squid Game”?
Netflix is going for something like that with its new Netflix Houses, a new permanent in-person experience venue for its shows that sounds a lot like a page out of the Disney playbook.
The two new Netflix Houses are set to take over former department store locations at the King of Prussia Mall near Philadelphia and at the Galleria mall in Dallas. But, surprisingly, there are no plans to use theaters at the malls.
