What to watch for today

The Bank of Japan tries stretching its monetary rope. With investor sentiment in Asia-Pacific hanging in the balance, Japan’s central bank begins a two-day policy meeting that is unlikely to yield dramatic enough action to weaken the yen. Based on those expectations, the currency hit a six-day high against the dollar.

Debate in the UN General Assembly begins. Speakers on tap include US president Barack Obama, French president Francois Hollande, UK prime minister Theresa May, and Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras.

Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties delists. The shares will move off the Hong Kong stock exchange following shareholder approval of a $4.4 billion buyout by Dalian Wanda Group. The group, headed by Wang Jianlin, hopes to get a higher valuation by relisting the shares in China.

While you were sleeping

The Chelsea bombing suspect is in custody. Ahmad Khan Rahami, wanted in connection with the explosion that shook Manhattan on Sept. 17, was arrested after a shootout in New Jersey. Two people looking for free stuff reportedly helped lead authorities to the 28-year-old Rahami, a US citizen who was born in Afghanistan.

Syria’s military ends a ceasefire. A monitoring group reported that aid trucks were attacked in air raids on Monday. The weeklong truce that was brokered by the US and Russia might still be salvaged, but the Syrian government officials and the opposition already are referring to the ceasefire in the past tense.

Rio Tinto Group’s CEO is feeling better about China. Jean-Sebastien Jacques tells Bloomberg Television he has become “cautiously optimistic” about the demand for commodities in China. The comment follows recent data showing an uptick in the construction market that could help the mining giant recover recover from a bad year caused by a slowdown in China.

GoPro debuts new cameras—and a drone. GoPro CEO Nick Woodman revealed the new products that are expected to make or break the company, at an event near Lake Tahoe in California. Karma, the drone that the company announced last December, was expected to mark a radical shift in the consumer drone market, but isn’t very different from what’s already out there.

Angela Merkel is taking stock. After a terrible showing in Sunday’s Berlin state election, the German chancellor admitted her party may have made mistakes in its handling of the refugee crisis. When Berliners in large numbers turned to the far right, Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union was knocked out of the ruling coalition with the Social Democrats.  

Quartz obsession interlude

Manu Balachandran on Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s sky-high popularity ratings two years in. Since coming to power, Modi has made foreign policy the cornerstone of his administration, traveling to as many as 42 countries and building India’s image as a regional soft power.
