Hello, Quartz Index readers!

There was an end followed by a beginning in Cuba this week. On Monday, the news of former Cuban president Fidel Castro’s death hit just as the first scheduled commercial flights from the US to Cuba in over 50 years prepared for take-off.

Just three days after the divisive leader’s death, JetBlue and American Airlines sent commercial flights from the US to Cuba—a metaphoric end to Castro’s legacy and Cuba’s economic isolation in the Americas.

Similarly, a US hedge fund that invests in companies with strong presence in Cuba, saw a huge jump in share price after news of Castro’s death renewed hopes that the trade embargo with Cuba could be lifted sooner rather than later.

But investors and tourists shouldn’t get too excited. Castro’s death may not mean the complete normalization of Cuba-US relations. The two countries’ diplomatic ties face a new hurdle: president-elect Donald Trump.
