Hi Quartz members!
An interview with IBM CEO Ginni Rometty
We have an exclusive video interview with IBM’s chief executive today. Ginni Rometty spoke to Quartz editor in chief Kevin Delaney at the company’s annual Think event in San Francisco. Within the eight-minute conversation, Rometty goes into detail about how AI is changing hiring practices (no more so than at her own company, which she says has the most advanced AI-enabled HR process in the world). She also talks about how education is adapting to this new territory, and how IBM is looking beyond US colleges for the next pool of thinkers.
A toolkit and conference call for Microsoft watchers
We close out this week’s field guide on Microsoft with a rich directory of resources for anyone who wants to learn more and stay on top of the past and present tech giant. And join field guide writer and Microsoft expert Dave Gershgorn today (Friday) for a members-only conference call on the renewal of the Redmond, Washington Goliath. We’ll be meeting here at 11am ET/4pm GMT. If you’d like to call in, dial +1 888 240 2560 and enter meeting ID 722 994 440.
Consummate Consumer
The car-rental experience is never good, but we have eight totally legal tips (and one less-than-legal one) on how to make the process less soul-crushing and extortionate.
Next week: How recessions happen
Are we headed toward a recession? If your time horizon is long enough, the answer is inevitably yes. But what will the next recession look like? What will have caused it? Will we know before it’s too late? These and many other questions will be answered as we explore why economic downturns happen, how they’ve been handled in the past, and why the next one may be unlike any other we’ve encountered.
Let’s keep learning. Send questions, comments, and loss-damage waivers to members@qz.com.
Here’s to a rewarding day,
