Hi Quartz members,

There’s an old saying from Baron Anthony de Rothschild (made more recently in the superlative heist film Inside Man): “The time to buy is when there’s blood in the streets.” Tone that down a little, and you can start thinking about which goods and services begin to overperform when larger economic trends start to sag. We have an infographic today that looks at which businesses actually do well during a recession, and which are most adversely affected (Spoiler: if you make fancy stuff, it’s not a good time.) And a toolkit of resources for exploring further.

Over at Private Key, Matt De Silva writes about the future of ethereum, one of the world’s largest blockchain platforms. We also have an Insider View feature on what a reputation-management expert won’t tell you about the power of a bad review.

Coming up: a conference call this Friday at 11 am ET/4 pm GMT with Gwynn Guilford, author of this week’s field guide; and a Consummate Consumer feature on the value of airline lounges, even if you’re flying coach.

Let’s keep learning. Send questions, comments, and inferior goods to members@qz.com.

Here’s to a rewarding day,
