Hi members!

The CBD boom is upon us

Like the weed it comes from, CBD is growing fast and furious across the world. The hemp-based wellness serum is showing up in everything from beverages to massage oils, and there seems to be no end in sight to the ways this still-not-fully proven substance will be used.

CBD comes from the same plant that produces cannabis, but CBD itself is not intoxicating—meaning it can be sold with wild abandon as a lightly regulated health aid, sidestepping the still-rigorous rules and strictures that cannabis must operate under. Companies new and old are rushing into the space, hoping to capitalize on the world’s changing attitudes toward marijuana and its offshoots, people’s increasing concern about stress and anxiety, and the rise of the wellness-industrial complex.

Guiding you through this gold rush is Quartz’s global lifestyle reporter, Jenni Avins. Jenni’s been covering the world of cannabis for years, and she brings all her knowledge and analysis to an industry that has quickly eclipsed the traditional cannabis market.

Jenni begins her field guide of CBD with her state of play memo, which is a comprehensive look at CBD’s past, present, and future. Over the course of this week, Jenni will dive even deeper into CBD, with articles that include:

  • An interview with the first Wall Street analyst to cover cannabis and CBD
  • A deck that lays out CBD’s rapid growth in 15 charts
  • An examination of how CBD was able to distance itself from the history and politics of marijuana
  • A survey of some of the more… creative products that feature CBD
  • A toolkit giving you all the resources you need to stay on top of the CBD boom

Special Friday conference call from Cannes

In addition to covering CBD, Jenni is also reporting live from the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (aka: the place where the media/advertising industry hobnobs, drinks rosé, and figures out how we’re all going to be sold on products and companies in the year ahead). Join her and our global finance and economics editor, Jason Karaian as we hold a special conference call on Friday, June 21 at 8:30 am EDT/1:30 pm BST/2:30 pm CEST.
