In mid-March, one of my colleagues created an “at-home workouts” channel on Slack, where we do most of our communicating. As you can imagine, it’s been busy. But how are the pros working out from home? In a new video exclusively for Quartz members, Quartz video journalists Meghan McDonough and Michael Tabb interviewed several Olympic athletes about their current training regimens.

The games may have been postponed, but athletes are still getting their workouts in, even though they’re house-bound like the rest of us. Sophie Souwer, a rower from the Netherlands, is doing squat jumps on her stairs. Canadian climber Alannah Yip has substituted a KitchenAid mixer for weights.

When I asked all of you about routines last week, Marilyn from Vermont reported completing an hour of exercise by video each day, and Jorge’s schedule includes waking up at 3:45am to get a fitness session in. (I’m impressed, as my own home workouts have been both infrequent and lackluster.) But as Meghan reports in the video, “Fitness is more than just physical training.” Lawson Craddock, an American cyclist, says he’s spent the last few weeks focused on mental health.

MINDING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

More than 700 readers around the world joined us yesterday for our Quartz at Work (from home) workshop on mental health, a testament to just how critical that issue is at this particular moment. Among other things, Quartz executive editor Heather Landy spoke with experts about how to recognize symptoms of quarantine-induced anxiety in yourself and in others.

Here are some tips on how to combat anxiety during the pandemic, each of which is explained in more detail here:

  • Stay in touch
  • Set boundaries
  • Exercise
  • Limit social media as needed
  • Continue to see your mental health provider
  • Keep a routine you follow on a daily basis
  • Find volunteer opportunities
  • Join group chats at work

As a member, you can watch a recording of the event and read our summary here.

Best wishes for a safe and restorative weekend,
