From surveillance states to social media addiction to engineered pandemics — the writers who got there first, what they saw that others didn't, and how close the resemblance has become

Prediction is not what serious fiction writers think they are doing. They are examining the present — its contradictions, its trajectories, its concealed logic — and following those threads to their conclusions. The result, sometimes, is a book or film that appears to describe the future because it has accurately read the present more clearly than most people in the present were able to read it. The surveillance state in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four was not a fantasy — it was an extension of the bureaucratic totalitarianism that Orwell had observed in Stalinist Russia and in the British colonial administration, pushed forward to where its logic arrived. The social media addiction in Dave Eggers's The Circle was not a guess — it was an analysis of the incentive structures that tech companies had already built, extended to their foreseeable conclusion.
The writers who get the future right are rarely the ones who set out to predict it. They are the ones who attend most carefully to what is already happening and who are willing to follow observations to uncomfortable destinations without the conventions that most public discourse uses to soften or defer those destinations. They write before the pattern is obvious — before there is social permission to say what they are saying — and the result is that their work looks prophetic from a distance of decades when in fact it was simply honest in real time.
This list covers 20 works — novels, short stories, films, and one television series — whose specific predictions have been borne out with a precision that goes beyond the lucky guesses that haunt any sufficiently large body of speculative fiction. Nineteen Eighty-Four's predictions are so thoroughly realized that its vocabulary has entered the language as a description of actual contemporary phenomena: doublethink (the ability to hold two contradictory beliefs simultaneously and accept both), newspeak (the deliberate limitation of language to limit thinkable thoughts), the memory hole (the continuous revision of historical records to match current political requirements), and Big Brother (the omnipresent surveillance figure whose constant watching modifies behavior regardless of whether actual observation occurs).
What Orwell got specifically right was not the specific technology of surveillance — the telescreen was a prescient invention — but the social and psychological mechanisms through which surveillance operates on human behavior. The Panopticon effect (the behavior modification that occurs when people believe they might be observed, whether or not they actually are) was theorized by Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century and analyzed by Michel Foucault in the 20th. Orwell dramatized it in a way that made it intuitively legible to non-specialists, and the result was the most useful fictional framework for understanding social media, smartphone tracking, corporate data collection, and state surveillance that exists.
What Orwell got wrong, or at least differently right: the surveillance in Nineteen Eighty-Four is state-operated, coercive, and clearly identified as oppressive. The surveillance we live with is largely corporate, formally voluntary, and experienced by many people as convenient rather than oppressive — a more insidious arrangement whose resistance is more complicated because its oppressive character is less legible.

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World describes a society controlled not through terror and privation but through pleasure, pharmaceutical contentment, and the replacement of genuine human experience with engineered satisfactions. Citizens are genetically engineered into predetermined social castes, conditioned through sleep-learning to prefer their assigned roles, and maintained in social compliance through the freely available drug soma, which provides a reliable, consequence-free euphoria on demand. Art, religion, and family have been abolished because they produce the kinds of intensity — passion, grief, transcendence — that complicate the management of a stable consumer society.
Neil Postman's 1985 cultural analysis "Amusing Ourselves to Death" used Huxley's dystopia as its thesis: where Orwell feared those who would ban books, Huxley feared a culture that had simply stopped wanting to read them. The specific prediction Huxley got right was not the soma (though the pharmaceutical management of mood with antidepressants, anxiolytics, and recreational drugs is a functional parallel) but the replacement of deep engagement with engineered shallow satisfaction — the dopamine economy of social media, streaming optimization, and the personalization algorithms that give people more of what they already want rather than introducing them to what they do not yet know to want.

The specific mechanisms Eggers predicted with accuracy: the gamification of social participation (the protagonist receives ratings and social scores for her engagement, anxiety mounts when engagement falls below expectations), the corporate surveillance of employees in the name of wellness and productivity, the normalization of cameras in every space, and the specific social dynamics of a tech company whose employees have genuinely internalized its values rather than merely performing compliance with them.
The social dynamics of Silicon Valley culture — the genuine belief systems, the utopian self-presentation, the peer pressure that functions as social control — were already present in 2013 and Eggers described them with unusual accuracy. The novel was criticized by some reviewers for being too obvious and too heavy-handed in its thesis. The subsequent decade, in which the specific dynamics it described became mainstream social reality, has complicated that criticism.

The specific predictions that proved accurate: the internet as a navigable three-dimensional space (the metaphor was more accurate to how the internet is experienced than the reality of packet-switching networks, but it structured how the internet was conceived); the corporation as the primary power structure of the near-future (the five largest companies in the world by market capitalization in 2026 are all technology corporations, a development consistent with Gibson's vision); and the social and economic stratification of technological access that makes some people rich and most people infrastructure.
Gibson famously said that the future is already here, just unevenly distributed — a statement that has become one of the most cited observations about technological change. Neuromancer was, in retrospect, not a prediction of the future but a sharper reading of the present in 1984 than most people were able to perform.

Isaac Asimov's I, Robot — a collection of linked short stories organized around the Three Laws of Robotics (a robot may not injure a human being, a robot must obey human orders unless they conflict with the first law, a robot must protect its own existence unless this conflicts with the first two laws) — predicted the specific logical and ethical problems of governing machine behavior that are now the central questions of AI alignment research.
