Eleven people were killed Sunday when a skydiving plane went down in Tomblaine, a town in northeastern France, according to The Associated Press. The dead included the pilot, five parachuting instructors, and five student skydivers.
A malfunction sent the aircraft into a near-vertical fall, Yves Séguy, prefect of the Meurthe-et-Moselle region, told broadcaster BFM-TV, according to the AP. The plane, owned by a skydiving club, had taken off from Nancy-Essey airfield, which sits on the outskirts of Nancy. The plane came down on the edge of a built-up area near a housing estate and a shopping centre.
