The recall covers bulk frappe, hot cocoa, and sweet ground powder mixes sold to food service customers and through e-commerce platforms
Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is recalling 13 powdered beverage mixes over possible salmonella contamination, the company said. No illnesses have been reported, and none of the affected products have tested positive for salmonella.
According to Allrecipes, the action is connected to a wider milk powder recall initiated by California Dairies, Inc., which supplies ingredients to Ghirardelli. Ghirardelli said it is acting out of an abundance of caution.
Restaurants and other institutions were the primary intended recipients of the affected products, which were sold in large commercial quantities. The company noted that some of the recalled mixes could have reached individual consumers by way of online retail channels.
The 13 recalled products include several frappe mixes, hot cocoa, and sweet ground powder varieties across multiple package sizes — among them 30-lb., 10-lb., and smaller 6/3-lb. and 6/3.12-lb. formats. Specific recalled items include the 30-lb. Chocolate Flavored Frappe, 30-lb. Classic White Frappe, 4/2-lb. Premium Hot Cocoa Pouch Bulk, 6/3-lb. Chocolate & Cocoa Sweet Ground Powder, 6/3.12-lb. White Chocolate Flavored Sweet Ground Powder, and several frappe mixes in vanilla, mocha, white mocha, frozen hot cocoa, and classic white varieties. Full lot numbers and best-if-used-by dates for each product are listed in Ghirardelli's recall announcement.
Certain populations face elevated risk from salmonella, including older adults, young children, and people whose immune systems are compromised, for whom the illness can prove fatal. Among otherwise healthy people, typical symptoms of a salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and lead to more severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Anyone in possession of the recalled products is urged to discard them rather than use them.
