General Motors $GM saw U.S. sales fall by 4.2% in the second quarter, selling 714,896 vehicles compared to 746,588 a year earlier. Lower demand for electric vehicles and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks contributed to the decline.
EV sales dropped 33% from last year, partly because many buyers rushed to purchase electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2025, expecting the Trump administration to end a tax credit of up to $7,500. Silverado sales fell 7.7% for the quarter, and the electric version dropped 25.9%.
In the first half of 2026, GM sold 1.3 million vehicles, down 6.8% from the same period in 2025. All four GM brands saw lower sales. Cadillac had the biggest drop at 19.2%, followed by Buick at 7.5%, Chevrolet at 3.9%, and GMC at 0.3%.
A bright spot in the quarter was the GMC Sierra, whose sales climbed 5%, with both the electric variant and the light-duty 1500 model recording double-digit gains. GM said it still expects to have gained market share in the full-size truck segment during the period despite the Silverado decline.
"Our business is performing well, and customer demand is resilient, especially for our trucks and SUVs," GM North America President Duncan Aldred said in a statement. "The depth, breadth and appeal of our vehicle portfolio allows us to lead the market in sales, while maintaining discipline on inventory, pricing and incentives to deliver strong margins."
Cox Automotive had projected steeper losses heading into the period, forecasting a 5.1% second-quarter decline and a 7.2% drop for the full first half, making the actual outcome a modest beat against those expectations, according to CNBC.
