The hybrid power control units in certain 2024-2026 models can overheat under high electrical loads, potentially causing a fire

Hyundai Motor is recalling 54,337 vehicles in the U.S. after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that an electrical component in certain Elantra Hybrid sedans could overheat and pose a fire risk. The recall covers 2024-2026 model year Elantra Hybrids.
The NHTSA says the recall is due to a defect that can cause the hybrid power control unit to become dangerously hot under high electrical demand. In serious cases, this heat can damage the unit and its internal parts. Cars with this problem might not start or could lose power and only run in limp mode.
A software update for the hybrid power control unit will be available at no cost, with owners directed to visit a dealership to have the fix applied. Hyundai expects to begin sending written notices to affected owners sometime in July. Hyundai's customer service line is available at 1-855-371-9460.
Hyundai has been active on the recall front in recent months. The automaker recalled 294,128 vehicles after the NHTSA found that seat belt anchors in certain Ioniq 6, Genesis G90, Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Hybrid models might come loose, leaving occupants without adequate restraint in a collision. A separate Hyundai action halted sales of certain 2026 Palisade trims following the death of a child, with the company citing concerns that power seats in the second and third rows could fail to detect the presence of passengers or objects.
