Vegetarians seem to be flocking to food-delivery app Swiggy.

This year saw an almost 20-percentage point jump in vegetarian-food orders on the platform. While 43% of Swiggy’s total orders were vegetarian last year, this year, that number was a whopping 62%.

The data is based on analysis of orders placed on Swiggy between December 2017 and November 2018.

Indians stuck to local dishes more than global cuisines, with chicken biryani being the most ordered one, followed by masala dosa, a popular south Indian dish.

In fact, biryani saw a dramatic surge in popularity in 2018, with orders rising by 681%, Swiggy said.

Healthy and often economical, south Indian dishes ruled the roost when it came to favourite breakfasts:

But when it came to night-time orders, north Indian cuisine had a slight edge:

In a country with a growing obesity crisis—5% of Indian adults are expected to be overwieght by 2025—fried food dominated the most popular snacks ordered on Swiggy this year:

But Indians weren’t just eating heavy food. This year saw an increase in individuals ordering “planned, healthy, and single-serve meals,” which often came with “eco-friendly packaging options,” Swiggy said. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were the cities that ordered the healthiest food overall.
