After weeks of being sniped at, the celebrated central banker of Asia’s third largest economy announces that he won’t seek a second term. The government—and indeed, the country—are caught off guard. There are concerns over the stability of the markets, the currency, the government’s reform trajectory and even the central bank’s independence.
